Bilbao riots erupt following cancellation of Vito Quiles event

Violent disturbances broke out in Bilbao, Spain, on Monday following the cancellation of a planned appearance by right-wing commentator Vito Quiles. The event, originally scheduled near the University of Deusto, was called off after authorities warned of a high risk of violence from antifascist protesters.

Clashes between masked groups and law enforcement resulted in significant property damage, including the burning of several vehicles, garbage containers, and a municipal police motorcycle. Protesters also erected barricades, launched fireworks, and engaged in looting at various commercial stores. The University of Deusto suspended all academic activities and closed its campus preventively in coordination with the Ertzaintza police force.

Authorities reported between 14 and 20 arrests during the unrest. Basque President Imanol Pradales condemned the violence as “intolerable” and “pure fascism,” while Bilbao Mayor Juan Mari Aburto criticized those using violence to respond to provocations. The incidents occurred despite the fact that Quiles did not attend the city.
