Unrest in Spain following Vito Quiles visits

Overview

A series of violent disturbances occurred in Spanish cities following visits or scheduled appearances by activist Vito Quiles.

In Pamplona, the City Council issued a declaration condemning violent acts that took place on October 15, 2026, near Yamaguchi Park. The incidents involved the burning of containers, the throwing of objects, and clashes with police. The council’s declaration rejected “discourses and attitudes of hate and intolerance” while also addressing the role of “provocation or confrontation” in deteriorating coexistence.

Following the cancellation of a scheduled event in Bilbao due to high-risk warnings from the Ertzaintza, riots erupted in the Deusto neighborhood. Demonstrators engaged in vandalism, including burning vehicles and containers, targeting a police station with stones, and erecting barricades. The University of Deusto suspended academic activities to ensure safety. Basque political leaders condemned the violence, with Lehendakari Imanol Pradales describing the actions as “intolerable.”
