University of Granada estimates 6.8 million euros in earthquake damage

The University of Granada has finalized its assessment of damages caused by a series of earthquakes that occurred during the second half of August, totaling 6.8 million euros. This definitive figure is more than double the initial estimate of approximately 3 million euros.

The increase in the valuation follows a comprehensive inspection of university facilities. While the first phase of assessment in late August was limited by closed offices, laboratories, and administrative spaces, subsequent access allowed technical teams to identify the full extent of the impact. The final technical report spans 2,393 pages, identifying over 420 incidents and 1,027 individual repair items.

Significant damage was reported in several buildings, including the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation, the Faculty of Fine Arts, and the Hospital Real. The vulnerability is attributed to a combination of historical heritage elements, large built surfaces, complex roofing, and high-ceilinged spaces. The seismic series included movements reaching a magnitude of Mw 4.8 on August 14 and 18.

The assessment was coordinated by the Vice-Rectorate for Infrastructure and Sustainability, involving over 150 professionals. The formal claim was submitted to the Insurance Compensation Consortium on September 11.
