University of Groningen launches Frisian language degree

For the first time in 15 years, a dedicated bachelor's degree program in the Frisian language has launched at the University of Groningen. The program began this week with an initial cohort of three students.

Previously, Frisian studies were integrated into a broader Minorities & Multilingualism program, but lacked the interest required for a standalone degree. To ensure the program's viability despite low student numbers, financial support has been secured from both the national government in The Hague and the Province of Fryslân. The national government is contributing 340,000 euros annually, while the province will provide 220,000 euros over the next ten years.

Professor Arjen Versloot noted that while a program typically requires twenty students to be profitable, small languages often operate with much smaller cohorts, similar to French or German studies. The curriculum will cover linguistics, history, and Frisian culture, with students sharing some courses with Dutch language students.
