Regional development initiatives in Groningen

Overview

The Province of Groningen has implemented several regional development initiatives focused on education and specialized sectors.

In the academic sphere, the University of Groningen has launched a dedicated bachelor’s degree program in the Frisian language, the first of its kind in 15 years. To support the program’s viability despite a small initial cohort, the national government and the Province of Fryslân are providing combined annual and long-term financial support.

Furthering regional investment, the province announced a 4 million euro allocation through the Lifelong Learning scheme to prepare approximately 17,500 youth for the labor market via a collaboration of 113 schools. Additionally, a 1 million euro subsidy program will be available starting October 1, 2026, to fund agricultural innovation and sustainability experiments.
