Monterrey International Book Fair highlights cultural identity and literacy

The 34th edition of the Monterrey International Book Fair (FIL Monterrey) is currently underway, featuring a diverse array of cultural, literary, and academic presentations.

During the opening ceremonies, Argentine writer Alberto Manguel delivered an inaugural speech warning that while the number of readers is not declining, text comprehension is diminishing. He questioned how society can function effectively if readers struggle to interpret complex metaphors or arguments.

Historian Enrique Krauze, representing El Colegio Nacional, emphasized the vital role of culture as the “trunk and root” of society, contrasting its permanence with the shifting nature of politics. He also highlighted the humanistic traditions of figures like Alfonso Reyes and Gabriel Zaid.

Other notable activities include the University of Guanajuato (UG) participating in the fair with editorial presentations on economics and literature, and Fomento Cultural Banamex expanding its free digital catalog to increase access to Mexican artistic heritage. Additionally, the University of Guanajuato is presenting an exhibition titled “La fragilidad de la alegría,” which explores identity through ceramics and symbolic objects.
