University of Guanajuato wins state energy sustainability award

The Government of Guanajuato has awarded the University of Guanajuato (UG) the 2026 State Energy Sustainability Award. The university earned first place in the category of developing renewable energy generation projects for self-consumption by institutions and organizations.

The recognition stems from the success of the Marfil Campus solar farm, a key component of the university’s Energy Efficiency Program and its 2021-2030 Institutional Development Plan. The Marfil Campus was identified as the institution's highest electricity consumer due to its large user base.

To reduce dependence on the national power grid and conventional energy sources, the university installed a photovoltaic solar panel system. This clean energy system allows the university to generate its own electricity and feed surplus energy back into the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) network, promoting economic savings and reducing hydrocarbon-based pollution.
