University of Guanajuato renewable energy initiatives

The University of Guanajuato (UG) has implemented several renewable energy projects as part of its Institutional Energy Efficiency Program.

In August 2026, the university inaugurated a solar farm at its Celaya-Salvatierra Campus (Juan Pablo II site). Funded by the Fondo de Aportaciones Múltiples (FAM) with an investment of approximately 3,152,758.67 MXN, the facility has an annual generation capacity of 18,790.20 kWh. This project is expected to prevent the emission of 8,267.69 kg of CO2.

Following these efforts, the Government of Guanajuato granted the university the 2026 State Energy Sustainability Award. The institution took first place in the category for developing renewable energy generation projects for self-consumption. This recognition specifically highlighted the success of the Marfil Campus solar farm, which was designed to reduce the campus's high electricity consumption and dependence on the national power grid by feeding surplus energy back into the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) network.
