University of Michigan study links food insecurity to dementia risk
Researchers at the University of Michigan have identified a potential link between food insecurity and cognitive decline in older adults. According to a study published in ‘The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition’, a lack of regular access to sufficient, high-quality food may lead to nutritional and psychological consequences that impact brain function and cognitive health.
The study suggests a stronger connection between food insecurity and potential dementia in advanced adulthood, a correlation that was not observed in middle-aged participants. Investigator Noura Insolera noted that while the impact of hunger on childhood learning is well-documented, long-term data collection is required to analyze complex relationships such as the risk of dementia.
The research utilized longitudinal data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, which is the longest-running representative household panel survey in the United States.
