University of Molise hosts international conference on transhumance

The University of Molise hosted an international conference titled ‘Transhumance and Pastoralism: Biocultural Heritage and Ecosystemic Services’. The event is part of the initiatives for the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026.

Discussions focused on the relationship between extensive pastoralism, rural development policies, and the preservation of internal areas. Regional authorities from Molise expressed support for the dialogue between research institutions and the pastoral sector. Additionally, the Superintendent for Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape for Molise emphasized the need to protect the physical infrastructure of the ‘tratturi’ (sheep tracks) to safeguard this cultural heritage from improper land use.
