University of Oulu study links coffee to improved body composition

A study from the University of Oulu in Finland, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, has identified associations between regular coffee consumption and improved body composition and hormonal profiles. Analyzing data from 2,264 participants from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966, researchers found that habitual coffee drinkers exhibited lower levels of total and visceral fat, as well as higher skeletal muscle mass, compared to those who consumed less coffee, even when body mass index (BMI) was similar.

The research also noted metabolic differences, including lower circulating concentrations of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), which are linked to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes risk. Hormonal associations were particularly pronounced in men, who showed more favorable glucose-insulin profiles and higher levels of total and bioavailable testosterone, along with increased concentrations of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). In women, the hormonal associations were more limited, primarily involving higher SHBG levels and lower free androgen values.

Researchers emphasized that because this is an observational study, the findings indicate associations rather than a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Further studies, including animal models, are being conducted to determine if coffee consumption directly causes these biological changes and to identify the specific responsible compounds.
