University of Patras professor implements strict rules to prevent AI cheating

A mathematics professor at the University of Patras has implemented strict new rules for upcoming September exams to prevent cheating facilitated by artificial intelligence. To ensure academic integrity, students are required to write exclusively in pencil and must provide medical certification if they need to wear eyeglasses during the examination.

The measures aim to combat the use of advanced technologies, such as AI-integrated smart glasses and ear-based devices, which have replaced traditional cheating methods. The professor stated these restrictions are intended to protect students who have prepared honestly and to prevent the exam from becoming an ‘AI festival.’

University Rector Christos Bouras noted that while cheating has always existed, AI can now be used to detect suspicious written work. The university has established a ‘Roadmap’ to address technological challenges, which includes informing new faculty members and implementing sample oral examinations.
