Challenges facing Greek universities

Greek universities are navigating various challenges ahead of the September examination period, ranging from student unrest to technological threats to academic integrity.

At the Technical University of Crete, student associations have organized a mobilization for September 9 to protest against potential student dismissals. Protesters have described the threat of dismissal as an ‘unfair and heartless’ measure and are demanding additional unrestricted exam sessions and relief for students nearing the completion of their studies.

Simultaneously, the University of Patras is addressing the rise of academic dishonesty facilitated by artificial intelligence. To prevent the use of AI-enabled devices such as smart glasses or earpieces, a mathematics professor has implemented strict protocols requiring students to use only pencils and provide medical certification for wearing eyeglasses. The university has developed a ‘Roadmap’ to combat these technological challenges, which includes faculty training, the use of AI to detect plagiarism, and the implementation of sample oral examinations. Rector Christos Bouras noted that these measures are necessary to protect students who prepare honestly and to prevent exams from becoming an ‘AI festival.’
