University of Pisa and Tuscan Archipelago National Park sign research pact
The University of Pisa and the Tuscan Archipelago National Park have signed a three-year memorandum of understanding to transform the islands into a living laboratory for sustainability, scientific innovation, and professional training. Signed by Rector Riccardo Zucchi and Park President Matteo Arcenni, the agreement aims to align academic expertise with the specific needs of island communities.
Key initiatives include the establishment of summer schools, scholarships, seminars, and field internships. Research areas will span natural, biological, and geological sciences, agriculture, forestry, archaeology, history, engineering, and computer science. The partnership also focuses on promoting sustainable tourism, including naturalistic, cultural, and gastronomic sectors.
One of the first operational projects will support mariculture on the island of Capraia. This sector is currently facing significant challenges due to climate change and a bacterial outbreak causing unusual mortality rates among sea bream and sea bass in marine farms. The collaboration seeks to foster economic and social development by involving local communities and promoting entrepreneurship and employment.
