University of Portalegre launches AI4PRIME project for sustainable agriculture

The Polytechnic University of Portalegre (UPP) is developing the AI4PRIME project, which aims to drive the digital transformation of the agriculture and livestock sectors. Led by Professor Sérgio Correia, the initiative focuses on creating accessible, efficient, and low-energy artificial intelligence solutions.

A key feature of the project is the integration of AI into electronic devices capable of collecting and processing data locally, specifically designed for farms with limited internet connectivity. The project seeks to address challenges such as rising production costs, labor shortages, and climate change by providing tools to monitor production conditions, anticipate critical situations, and automate processes.

The project involves multidisciplinary collaboration across electrical engineering, data science, agronomy, and information systems. It is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) through the ALT2030 Alentejo Regional Program 2021-2027, with a total eligible investment of approximately 200,000 euros. Completion is expected by August 31, 2028.
