AI and digital innovation in Portuguese and Brazilian higher
Overview
Higher education and technology sectors in Portugal and Brazil are increasingly focusing on artificial intelligence and digital innovation.
In Portugal, the University of Coimbra is coordinating the DEFIA Portugal Network, a national initiative under the international Digital Education for Impact Alliance. This network seeks to promote the responsible and sustainable use of AI through literacy for students and faculty, ethical implementation, and cooperation between academia, industry, and the public sector. The network's first major action involves the presentation of the Portuguese National Statement, which outlines university commitments to digital governance and human dignity. The Universidade Politécnica de Viana do Castelo (UNIPVC) has joined this network, implementing usage guides and formal AI declarations. Additionally, the Universidade Politécnica de Portalegre (UPP) is developing the AI4PRIME project. Funded by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) through the ALT2030 Alentejo Regional Program 2021-2027, this initiative targets the primary sector by using low-energy AI solutions to automate processes in agriculture and livestock. Led by Professor Sérgio Correia, the project utilizes devices capable of local data processing to assist farms with limited internet access, with completion expected by August 2028.
In Brazil, academic engagement is manifesting through international representation and local competitions. Uniavan (Centro Universitário Avantis) recently represented the state of Santa Catarina at UNESCO headquarters in Paris as part of the 8th International Delegation of the Brazilian Association of Higher Education Maintainers (ABMES). Leaders engaged in discussions on global trends, including AI and active methodologies. Concurrently, the Ideathon GovTech in Francisco Beltrão utilizes students to develop AI solutions for municipal administration, while the Aveiro Tech City Hackathon in Portugal targets urban innovation through challenges like ‘Smart Aveiro: From Data to Action’.
