Australian scientists develop cyborg cockroaches for disaster rescue
Researchers from the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales have developed “Paraborgs,” a system of cyborg cockroaches designed for search and rescue operations. Using the North Queensland giant burrowing cockroach (Macropanesthia rhinoceros), engineers have integrated miniature electronics, including cameras and remote-controlled injection devices, onto the insects' bodies.
Unlike previous cyborg insect research that focused solely on locating survivors, this project aims to provide medical assistance. The insects can navigate narrow, debris-filled spaces—such as collapsed buildings or caves—that are inaccessible to humans or traditional robots. One configuration uses a camera to provide real-time visual feedback, while another carries an automated syringe to deliver emergency medication like analgesics or coagulants under human supervision.
Initial tests showed a 95% success rate for injections at a distance of 15 centimeters, with a 72% overall success rate for the combined task of navigation and administration. Scientists believe these biological tools offer superior agility, resilience, and energy efficiency compared to current robotics. The team estimates that specialized cyborg insect teams could be deployed in real-world disaster scenarios within five to ten years.
