University of Queensland cyborg cockroach development

Overview

Researchers at the University of Queensland, in collaboration with the University of New South Wales, are developing “paraborgs”—cyborg cockroaches intended for search-and-rescue operations. Using the North Queensland giant burrowing cockroach (Macropanesthia rhinoceros), scientists insert electrodes into the insects' antennae and sensory appendages to enable remote control via joystick.

These biological platforms are designed to navigate complex environments like earthquake rubble or caves where traditional robots may struggle. The technology has evolved to include lightweight electronic harnesses that can carry miniature cameras for real-time reconnaissance or specialized backpack systems. The researchers noted that the insects' natural agility, resilience, and low power requirements make them superior to small-scale robots for these specific environments.

Recent developments include an auto-injection system capable of delivering critical medication to trapped individuals. Unlike previous research focused solely on locating survivors, this project aims to provide active medical assistance, such as delivering analgesics or coagulants under human supervision. In proof-of-concept testing, the team reported a 100 per cent success rate in reaching designated targets. Regarding medical delivery, the system achieved a 95 per cent success rate for close-range injections within 15 centimetres of a target, contributing to an overall task success rate of approximately 72 per cent.

While the technology shows promise, researchers noted that further testing is required to address challenges regarding movement in complex terrain, injection safety, and signal stability. The team estimates that specialized cyborg insect teams could be deployed in real-world disaster scenarios within five to ten years.
