University of Queensland researchers develop cyborg cockroaches for rescue
Researchers at the University of Queensland are developing “paraborgs”—cyborg cockroaches designed to assist in search-and-rescue operations. Using giant burrowing cockroaches native to north Queensland, scientists insert electrodes into the insects' antennae and sensory appendages to allow for remote control via joystick.
These cyborgs are intended to navigate complex disaster zones, such as earthquake rubble or remote caves, where traditional robots may lack the necessary agility or size. The latest iterations include a specialized backpack system capable of delivering medicine by firing syringes via a harpoon mechanism. Biorobotics specialist Dr. T. Thang Vo-Doan noted that using biological insects simplifies engineering, as they are naturally equipped to climb, run, and carry loads in difficult environments.
