University of Seville approves 533 jobs amid financial deficit dispute
The University of Seville is implementing significant structural and financial changes as it manages a budgetary deficit. The university's Social Council has approved a transfer of 9.6 million euros from investment funds to personnel expenses, adding to 5.4 million euros previously allocated. This brings the total reinforcement for personnel costs to over 15 million euros as part of the 2026-2027 Economic-Financial Plan.
This plan aims to achieve savings of approximately 16 million euros by the end of 2026 through organizational efficiency and strategic fund collection. Additionally, the university has approved a Public Employment Offer for 2026, which includes 533 positions: 282 for teaching and research staff and 251 for technical, management, and administrative services.
Concurrently, the CSIF union has filed a complaint with the Seville Prosecutor's Office regarding the institution's financial deficit. The union is seeking an investigation into the management of university funds, alleging that the deficit—which they claim originated under former rector Miguel Ángel Castro—has led to unpaid staff supplements. The union is calling for accountability from current leadership to clarify the financial crisis and establish a payment schedule for outstanding debts to workers.
