University of Staffordshire study reveals illegal trade in mummified remains

A study led by bioarchaeologist Kirsty Squires at the University of Staffordshire has documented a flourishing illegal trade in mummified human and animal remains across various internet platforms. Between 2015 and 2025, researchers identified 128 advertisements for items including skulls, hands, feet, and embalmed animals.

Most of the documented remains originated from Egypt and South America. The study noted significant demand in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Researchers suggest that cultural traditions regarding the public display of the deceased may contribute to this demand, noting the long history of embalming practices in the United States.

The report also highlights the dangers associated with the illegal trade, noting that historical instances of grave robbing and the disturbance of burial sites have been linked to documented fatalities.
