University of Szeged to host conference on Battle of Mohács research

The University of Szeged will host a multidisciplinary international conference in October to present new anthropological, archaeological, and historical research findings regarding the Battle of Mohács.

Researchers from the University of Szeged's Department of Anthropology, led by György Pálfi, have utilized forensic methods to reconstruct events from five centuries ago. Their findings suggest a reassessment of the battle's aftermath; specific cut wounds identified on several skeletons indicate that many individuals may have been executed as prisoners rather than killed on the battlefield.

Other academic focuses include the study of Neo-Latin historical and literary sources by Péter Kasza, as well as investigations into Hungarian-Habsburg-Ottoman diplomatic relations. The four-day conference, titled ‘Mohács-1526—Szeged-2026’, will feature experts from Hungary and nations historically connected to the conflict, including Austria, Bosnia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Serbia, France, Germany, and Turkey.
