University of Utah rape reports largely linked to single relationship

The University of Utah reported 146 rapes in 2024, a figure that has drawn national attention due to its high volume compared to other institutions. However, university officials and data reviews indicate that 110 of those reports stem from a single case involving one man and one woman.

Under the federal Clery Act, universities are required to log each alleged assault separately. In this instance, the university described the situation as a “multiple-month relationship plagued by interpersonal violence” between two students. The same relationship also accounted for 110 reported incidents of dating violence. Both individuals involved have since graduated.

Regarding the location of the reported incidents, 122 occurred in dormitories, 18 in other campus buildings, and six on university-run or student organization property. While the 2024 figures were notably high, recent data suggests a decrease in reported sexual violence at the institution since that period.
