University of Vienna study finds dogs distinguish human facial emotions

Researchers at the University of Vienna have provided the first neurobiological evidence that dogs can distinguish between specific negative human facial expressions. The study, published in the journal iScience, utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and machine learning to analyze the brain activity of dogs while they observed photographs of unfamiliar people.

Findings revealed that happy faces specifically activate the temporal cortex and the caudate nucleus, regions associated with cognitive processing and reward systems. This suggests that happy human faces hold emotional significance for dogs. While the reward-related regions did not respond to negative expressions, a whole-brain analysis identified distinct activity patterns that allowed dogs to differentiate between fear, anger, and sadness.

Lead author Laura Cuaya noted that dogs have evolved alongside humans to understand our expressions and cooperate with us. Researchers suggest this understanding could improve how humans communicate with and care for their pets. Future studies will investigate how dogs integrate these facial cues with other signals such as body language, voice nuances, and scent.
