Researchers from the University of Vienna, Eötvös Loránd University, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico have published findings in the journal iScience regarding canine cognition. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and machine learning, the study provides neurobiological evidence that dogs can distinguish between various human facial expressions.

The research indicates that dogs can differentiate between specific negative emotions, such as fear, anger, and sadness. This marks the first evidence that dogs can differentiate between similar facial expressions of negative affect. Co-author Laura Cuaya noted that this provides the first evidence that a dog’s brain can differentiate between emotions with the same valence. Researchers suggest that the ability to distinguish fear may be biologically significant, as it can signal potential danger to the animal, and that different negative expressions may trigger distinct reactions because they signal different types of threats.

Additionally, happy human faces were found to activate brain regions associated with reward and cognitive processing, specifically the temporal cortex and the caudate nucleus. This activation pattern is noted to be similar to the brain responses dogs exhibit when expecting food, receiving praise, or smelling a familiar person, suggesting that happy human faces hold positive value for them.

While the findings provide neurological evidence of emotion recognition, the results are limited to domestic dogs living in loving environments. Researchers emphasized that real-world perception likely involves additional cues, such as scent, body language, and vocal nuances. Furthermore, related biological studies have emerged regarding canine aging; by analyzing DNA methylation patterns in Labrador Retrievers, scientists have developed a natural logarithmic mathematical formula to more accurately calculate a dog’s age in human years.
