University of Zurich study reveals brain self-healing mechanisms
Researchers at the University of Zurich have identified specific mechanisms by which the brain attempts to repair cellular networks following cell loss. According to a study published in Nature Neuroscience, astrocytes—a type of glial cell—play a critical role in this regenerative process by restructuring the tissue to maintain functional integrity.
Using a mouse model, the study observed that cell nuclei migrate through tissue at an average speed of 3.5 µm/h, traveling distances exceeding 100 µm to reach damaged areas. This spatial restructuring allows astrocytes to repopulate orphaned regions and establish new, stable cellular networks.
Quantitative data from the research shows a cell division rate of 60% within a 60-day period. However, the study also noted limitations to this self-healing capacity, particularly in areas experiencing severe trauma, such as stroke lesions.
