Overview
Scientific research has identified new mechanisms regarding the brain’s regenerative and immune responses to injury and neurodegeneration. Studies from the University of Zurich, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and the University of California San Diego have highlighted the roles of specific cells in maintaining or damaging brain tissue.
Researchers at the University of Zurich demonstrated that the adult brain has a higher regenerative capacity than previously understood. Using mouse models, they found that specialized “regenerative” astrocytes can re-populate damaged regions by sending new cell nuclei to lesion sites. This process involves astrocytes restructuring tissue to maintain functional integrity, with observed cell nuclei migration speeds of 3.5 µm/h and a cell division rate of 60% over a 60-day period, though capacity is limited in severe trauma cases like stroke.
In addition to repair mechanisms, studies have mapped the immune response to neurodegeneration. Scientists identified a protective subtype of microglia that expands during Alzheimer’s disease progression, utilizing TREM2 pathways to clear harmful material. However, research also indicates that certain cellular pathways, such as the MITF/TFE protein switches, can become maladaptive. While intended to protect the brain from waste buildup in conditions like Alzheimer’s and Sanfilippo syndrome type A, these responses can trigger inflammation and neuronal death.
