University students face digital harassment and AI-manipulated imagery

Students at the Universidad Nacional de Asunción (UNA) in Paraguay have reported the unauthorized distribution of intimate images and AI-manipulated photographs. At least twenty female students have come forward, noting that the content was shared via an anonymous website and subsequently circulated through Telegram and WhatsApp groups. The victims reported that photos taken from their social media accounts were used to create deepfake montages.

In Argentina, the Supreme Court of Justice has set precedents regarding digital harassment and privacy. The court ruled in favor of a student from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata in a habeas data lawsuit against Facebook Argentina SRL. The ruling ordered the removal of social media posts that used the student's image without authorization to make defamatory claims. The court also mandated that the technology company provide registration data, including IP addresses and email addresses, to identify the account holders responsible for the posts.
