Unknown disease kills nine in Lubero, Nord‑Kivu, DRC

An unidentified illness in the Bapere sector of Lubero, Nord‑Kivu, has caused at least nine deaths over two weeks, with victims experiencing acute diarrhoea before dying. Local civil‑society leader Samuel Kagheni warned that people are fleeing the remote mining area of Mangumo for nearby towns such as Manguredjipa, Njiapanda and Lubero, raising concerns about wider spread. He urged health authorities to intervene urgently to identify the disease and prevent an epidemic. Health officials have dispatched investigation teams to collect samples and provide treatment, though no official confirmation of the disease’s nature has been released.
