UN‑led Cyprus talks start new prep phase, Greek Cypriot leader says

Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Hristodulidis said the United Nations‑facilitated process for the Cyprus issue has entered an intensive preparatory stage for an expanded conference. A UN‑appointed constitutional expert has been assigned, and the technical work is expected to continue through August, aiming for concrete results and a restart of negotiations.

Former chief negotiator Ergün Olgun, commenting on UN Secretary‑General António Guterres’ recent visit, said no common ground has yet been found. He stressed that any solution must be based on the sovereign equality and equal international status of the two communities. Olgun noted that progress is needed before a 5+1 format meeting can be arranged and referenced President Tufan Erhürman’s call to address property issues within a broader political framework.
