UNS memorial plaque for journalists Đuro Slavuj and Ranko Perenić vandalized for ninth time in Kosovo
The memorial plaque dedicated to abducted Radio Pristina journalists Đuro Slavuj and Ranko Perenić was destroyed for the ninth time on the Velika Hoča‑Zočište road in Kosovo. The plaque, first installed in 2012 by the Udruženje novinara Srbije (UNS) and DNKiM, bears the inscription “Here on 21 Aug 1998 our colleagues were abducted – we are looking for them.”
UNS president Živojin Rakočević condemned the act, calling the repeated vandalism “the ninth demolition of a monument to truth and media freedom.” He announced that UNS will rebuild the monument again, promising to do so “as long as we exist and the profession endures.” The only person found responsible for one of the past destructions, Šaban Beriša, received a conditional three‑month jail sentence and a €200 fine. The organization urged authorities to pursue the perpetrators and continue demanding justice for the missing journalists.
