Vandalism of journalist memorial plaque in Kosovo

Overview

A memorial plaque dedicated to abducted Radio Pristina journalists Đuro Slavuj and Ranko Perenić has been the target of repeated vandalism in Kosovo. In late July, the monument located on the Velika Hoča–Zočište road was destroyed for the ninth time. The Association of Journalists of Serbia (UNS) condemned the act as a “demolition of a monument to truth and media freedom” and pledged to rebuild it.

By late August, the plaque was reinstalled for the tenth time. The ceremony was organized by the UNS and attended by family members and OSCE representatives. The plaque bears an inscription in Serbian and Albanian stating that the journalists were abducted on August 21, 1998. While investigations by UNMIK and EULEX previously identified the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) as the perpetrators of the abduction, the journalists' whereabouts remain unknown.
