Unstoppable Domains cancels ICANN TLD applications, offers refunds
Unstoppable Domains has announced it will not seek ICANN recognition for nine of its Web3 top-level domains (TLDs) during the 2026 application round. The affected extensions include .crypto, .wallet, .polygon, .nft, .bitcoin, .dao, .unstoppable, .zil, and .blockchain.
Founder Matthew Gould stated that the decision was driven by the high costs associated with ICANN compliance, application fees, and potential auction processes, which were expected to exceed the revenue the company could recover from domain sales. This move effectively ends the company's plan to integrate these specific blockchain-based domains into the traditional Domain Name System (DNS).
The company will offer refunds to certain customers. For .blockchain, purchases made after June 5, 2024, are eligible. For the other affected TLDs, purchases made after March 5, 2025, qualify. The refund request window is set for August 25 through September 25, 2026.
Despite dropping these applications, Unstoppable Domains remains active in the space, having submitted five other TLDs to ICANN: .agi, .robot, .gram, .hub, and .xmr. The company also continues to serve as a provider for other applications, such as Telegram’s proposed .gram domain.
