Unstoppable Domains ICANN TLD application withdrawal

Overview

Unstoppable Domains has announced its decision to withdraw applications for several Web3 top-level domains (TLDs) from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) 2026 application round.

Initially, the company identified nine affected extensions, including .crypto, .wallet, .polygon, .nft, .bitcoin, .dao, .unstoppable, .zil, and .blockchain. Subsequent reports clarified that the withdrawal covers 14 TLDs. The company cited prohibitive costs, noting that base evaluation fees alone would exceed $2 million, alongside significant regulatory and operational hurdles. Specifically, ICANN requirements would necessitate integrating existing Web3 names into the traditional Domain Name System (DNS) and requiring the disclosure of registrant information, which the company declined to implement for its 4 million holders.

CEO Matthew Gould characterized the Web3 domain market as a niche sector, suggesting that demand may have been overestimated following the 2021 crypto bubble.

To assist affected users, the company has established a refund policy for specific purchases made after designated dates in 2024 and 2025. The refund request window is scheduled from August 25 through September 25, 2026. Despite these withdrawals, Unstoppable Domains is proceeding with five other TLD applications: .agi, .robot, .gram, .hub, and .xmr.
