Spanish agriculture faces training initiatives and rising sector protests

The Spanish agricultural sector is facing significant challenges and structural shifts. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) has opened applications for the ‘Cultiva 2026’ program, which offers 549 practical training placements for young professionals. The initiative, backed by a budget of 1.2 million euros, aims to facilitate generational renewal by allowing participants to learn diverse production models across Spain.

Simultaneously, agricultural organizations are raising alarms regarding the viability of farming. In Castilla-La Mancha, Asaja has announced planned mobilizations and legal actions to protest critical conditions, citing excessive bureaucracy, high production costs, and harvest restrictions due to fire risks. UPA has warned that family-run farms in the region are at risk of extinction due to rising costs for inputs like diesel and hydraulic oil, alongside fluctuating market prices.

In response to specific sector needs, regional authorities in Castilla-La Mancha are studying ways to adapt Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) criteria to better support truffle cultivation, seeking to ensure it is recognized as a standard agricultural activity to facilitate access to aid and youth incorporation programs.
