Urša Raukar Gamulin calls for postponement of HRT director election
Urša Raukar Gamulin, a Member of Parliament from the Možemo! party, has called for the cancellation of the current tender for the Director General of Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT). She is demanding that the election be postponed until the Croatian Parliament passes a new HRT Law that fully implements the protective mechanisms of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA).
Raukar Gamulin accused the ruling HDZ party of attempting to maintain political control over the public broadcaster. She suggested that delays in convening the Media Committee to vote on candidates may be due to internal power struggles within HDZ among various party factions.
The current recruitment process began in July with six candidates applying. While the Chairman of the Media Committee, Josip Borić, had previously indicated a vote would occur recently, the session has not yet been convened. Raukar Gamulin emphasized that the EMFA is an EU regulation with direct legal force in Croatia, requiring that the selection of public media heads be protected from political influence.
