Ural owls reintroduction: 28 young birds released in Northeast Bavaria
The Association for Landscape Management, Species Protection & Biodiversity (VLAB) has released 28 young Ural owls into the forests of Northeast Bavaria. This action is part of a nearly ten-year reintroduction project aimed at restoring a species that was once largely extinct in Germany.
The owls, which originated from zoos and wildlife parks in Germany, France, and Belgium, undergo several weeks of preparation in large aviaries to acclimate to wild conditions before being released. To support their survival, VLAB has installed nesting boxes in the area to supplement natural breeding sites like deadwood and tree stumps.
Since 2017, a total of 161 Ural owls have been released. The project has seen success, with wild-born offspring documented in the region since 2024. To monitor the population, twelve of the most recent owls are equipped with GPS-GSM transmitters. Project leader Michaela Domeyer noted that while the owls are successfully breeding, the first few months in the wild remain a critical period, with traffic accidents identified as a primary cause of mortality.
