Ural owl conservation and reintroduction efforts
Overview
Efforts to support Ural owl populations through artificial nesting sites and reintroduction programs are showing results across Europe.
In Estonia, a nest box installed four years ago facilitated the successful breeding of a Ural owl pair, which raised three owlets. Conservationists highlight that such boxes are vital as natural tree cavities become increasingly scarce.
In Germany, the Association for Landscape Management, Species Protection & Biodiversity (VLAB) has released 28 young Ural owls into Northeast Bavaria. This release is part of a decade-long reintroduction project that has released 161 owls since 2017. While wild-born offspring have been documented in the region since 2024, project leaders noted that the initial months in the wild remain a critical period, with traffic accidents cited as a primary cause of mortality.
