Urban heat island detection improves with block-level sensor technology

Researchers from Northeastern University suggest that current methods for combating urban heat are overly simplistic. While cities often compare entire districts, temperature variations of several degrees can exist between adjacent blocks depending on concrete density, building density, and tree presence.

To address these localized “heat islands,” experts recommend using dense networks of real-time sensors rather than relying solely on satellite data, which often lacks the resolution to distinguish between individual blocks. In Roxbury, Boston, the Common SENSES project has installed dozens of sensors to monitor temperatures minute-by-minute. Similar technologies are being implemented in Miami, Baltimore, Singapore, and Barcelona.

Precise data could allow for more cost-effective and strategic urban interventions, such as the targeted placement of pocket parks, cool roofs, and street trees. This approach aims to prevent the inefficiencies seen in previous large-scale projects where investments were spread too thinly across entire cities rather than concentrated in the most overheated areas.
