Urbaser expands lithium battery recycling capacity in Spain
Europe is undergoing a significant industrial transformation in the electric battery sector to reduce external market dependency and support sustainable mobility. This shift focuses on both production and recycling to secure a key position in the technological value chain.
In Spain, Urbaser has applied for integrated environmental authorization for its second lithium battery recycling plant, located in the PTR López Soriano industrial estate in Zaragoza. This facility is expected to exceed the capacity of the existing plant in León, with an annual treatment capacity of up to 36,000 tons.
This expansion makes Urbaser the first company in the Iberian Peninsula with the industrial capacity to meet the growing demand for battery treatment, a service historically managed abroad. The company is also developing a third facility in Castilla-La Mancha and is scouting locations in Portugal.
