Battery recycling industry expansion in Spain

Overview

Industrial activity regarding electric vehicle battery recycling and component recovery is expanding in Spain, particularly in the Zaragoza region.

Shenghe Energy Technology, via its subsidiary Veranova Technology, announced a 25 million euro investment to establish a plant in Pedrola, Zaragoza. The facility aims to recycle N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), a solvent used in battery manufacturing, with a goal of reaching a purity level exceeding 99.92% and becoming operational by 2028.

Concurrently, Urbaser has applied for environmental authorization for a second lithium battery recycling plant in Zaragoza. This facility is intended to have an annual treatment capacity of up to 36,000 tons, exceeding the capacity of the company’s existing plant in León. Urbaser is also developing a third facility in Castilla-La Mancha and exploring locations in Portugal to meet growing demand for battery treatment services.
