Uri Police arrest three suspects following Gotthard rest area theft

Three Georgian nationals were detained following a theft at a Gotthard rest area in the canton of Uri. On August 29, 2026, two travelers from France were targeted while they were at their vehicle's open trunk. An unidentified individual stole a backpack from the unlocked car.

Using video footage, the Uri Cantonal Police identified the suspect vehicle and coordinated with authorities in Ticino and customs officials in Chiasso. The vehicle was intercepted at the border, and three suspects—two 48-year-old men and one 36-year-old man—were taken into custody. Although the individuals have since been released, the investigation remains ongoing under the direction of the Uri public prosecutor's office.
