Ursula von der Leyen vows strict EU rules amid Ceuta migrant surge
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the images coming from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta are “unacceptable” and warned that the EU will not allow anyone to enter the Union without complying with its migration rules. She called for an immediate stop to dangerous crossings, the dismantling of smuggling networks and swift returns of migrants in line with existing regulations.
Von der Leyen tasked two commissioners with the response: Migration and Home Affairs Commissioner Magnus Bruener, who is already coordinating with Spanish authorities and is prepared to deploy to critical points, and Mediterranean Commissioner Dubravka Suica, who is in contact with the Moroccan government. The Commission plans to enhance operational support for Spain, including additional resources through Frontex.
The crisis involves more than 60,000 migrants crossing from Morocco to Ceuta in a 24‑hour period – roughly 70% of the enclave’s population – and has already claimed 34 lives. The EU’s stance signals a tougher enforcement of external border rules while seeking cooperation with Morocco to manage the flow.
