Uruapan Mayor Grecia Quiroz challenges Michoacán electoral reform

Mayor Grecia Quiroz of Uruapan announced that she will file an action of unconstitutionality before Mexico's Supreme Court (SCJN) against the electoral reform recently passed by the Michoacán state congress. The reform removes the "piso parejo" provision and imposes new financial and procedural requirements that, according to Quiroz, disadvantage independent candidates and civil groups such as the Movimiento del Sombrero.

Quiroz was accompanied by local legislator Carlos Bautista Tafolla, activist Julián LeBarón and members of the independent movement when she presented the case, and was received by SCJN President Hugo Aguilar Ortiz. She argued that the changes create disproportionate barriers for citizens who wish to run without party affiliation, limiting their ability to gather signatures and campaign resources. The mayor said she will pursue all legal and human‑rights avenues to overturn the decree. Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla of the Morena‑led state government defended the reforms, while President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum rejected claims that the changes aim to veto independent candidacies.
