Uruguay police dismantle prison drug ring in Operación Alcatraz
In Uruguay, authorities launched ‘Operación Alcatraz’ to dismantle a drug trafficking network operating within the Rocha and Las Rosas prisons. Eleven women, identified as partners of inmates, were charged with assisting narcotics trafficking. The investigation involved 11 raids across Rocha, San José, Maldonado, Chuy, and Cebollatí, resulting in the seizure of over one kilogram of cocaine. Four women were placed in pretrial detention for 120 days, while six others were ordered to undergo house arrest with electronic monitoring.
In Argentina, several criminal investigations are underway. In Rosario, a man was found shot to death in an abandoned house in the western zone. In Capitán Bermúdez, police arrested a 40-year-old man following the death of 58-year-old Roxana Villarreal, who was found in her home with a facial injury. Additionally, in Wheelwright, the Santa Fe government has offered a 16 million peso reward for information leading to the capture of those responsible for the 2014 homicide of Silvia Ciarrocchi.
