Uruguay introduces commemorative bread for Pope Leo XIV visit

Artisanal bakeries in Uruguay have begun offering ‘Pan de León XIV’, a special recipe created to honor the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to the country. Developed by the Uruguay Bakers Center, the bread incorporates symbolic ingredients from different regions of the Pope's life: rye to represent his hometown of Chicago, and potato, corn, and quinoa to represent Peru, where he previously served as bishop. Uruguay contributes its local French bread base, sourdough, and yeast.

The bread is shaped in a ‘rondín’ style with curved lines intended to simulate an embrace, conveying a message of “encounter” for Uruguayan families. Cardinal Daniel Sturla, the Archbishop of Montevideo, praised the initiative for its thoughtful integration of Mediterranean culture and the Pope's personal history.

The Vatican confirmed that Leo XIV will begin his apostolic journey in Uruguay from November 6 to 8, before continuing to Argentina and Peru through November 16. This visit follows recent medical news regarding the Pope, who underwent surgery at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome to treat an adenocarcinoma found in his right lung.
