Tropical wave brings heavy rain and storms to Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico

A tropical wave positioned over the Mona Channel is generating afternoon showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds across much of the Dominican Republic. The Instituto Dominicano de Meteorología (Indomet) warned of isolated morning showers along the southern coast and stronger rain bands in the afternoon for provinces including La Altagracia, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, Azua, San Juan, Santiago, Valverde, Santiago Rodríguez, Elías Piña, Dajabón, Monte Cristi, Independencia, Bahoruco and the Gran Santo Domingo area. Temperatures will remain hot (23‑25 °C minimum, 33‑35 °C maximum) and the National Forecast Center has kept a meteorological alert for urban flooding in Santo Domingo and San Cristóbal.

In Puerto Rico, the same wave is expected to produce scattered morning rain and stronger thunderstorms in the afternoon over the interior, west and northwest of the island, including the El Yunque area. Sea conditions will stay choppy with waves up to six feet and a moderate risk of hazardous currents. Local authorities advise residents to stay alert for possible localized flooding and to exercise caution on beaches.

No injuries or significant damage have been reported so far, but both nations are urging the public to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and follow official weather updates.
