Uruguay named top global destination for retirement

Uruguay has been named the top country for retirement in the 2026 Retirement Index released by Global Citizen Solutions. The index, which compares 46 retirement and passive income residency programs, evaluates factors such as quality of life, mobility, citizenship pathways, tax regimes, application processes, and costs.

Uruguay secured the top position by demonstrating strength across all five evaluated categories. Mauritius follows in second place, driven by its advantageous tax regime and strong overall performance. While Uruguay leads, Europe remains a dominant force in the top ten, accounting for six of the leading destinations including Spain, Portugal, Latvia, Andorra, Italy, and Greece.

The report notes that while European nations excel in quality of life and mobility, their scores are often tempered by high taxation. In contrast, the Americas are noted for relatively low costs and favorable tax structures, while Mauritius leads performance in the African region.
