Uruguay selects Panathinaikos winger Fakhund Pelistri for 2026 World Cup squad

Uruguay's national football team announced its 26‑player roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, confirming 24‑year‑old winger Fakhund Pelistri of Panathinaikos among the selections. Coach Marcelo Bielsa included Pelistri, who has earned 39 caps and scored two goals for Uruguay, and previously featured at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

Pelistri, who logged 53 appearances, four goals and seven assists for the Greek club, struggled with injuries during the most recent season, playing only 18 matches and providing two assists. Despite the setbacks, he secured his place in the World Cup squad and will miss the early pre‑season preparation with Panathinaikos.

Uruguay's group stage will begin in Miami on 15 June against Saudi Arabia, followed by a match against the Green Hornet, and a decisive fixture versus Spain on 26 June in Mexico's Akron Stadium.
