Uruguay to cede beef export quotas to Brazil and Australia
Uruguay is negotiating to cede a portion of its beef export quota to Brazil and Australia. According to Alejandro Sánchez, Secretary of the Presidency, the domestic industry lacks the capacity to fulfill the total annual quota of 324,000 tons, as exports to China currently cover only 30% to 35% of the volume.
This arrangement is viewed as a strategic gesture toward Brazil, following President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s decision in April to halt tariffs on Uruguayan dairy exports. The move aims to resolve an ongoing antidumping investigation.
Separately, Australian analyst Simon Quilty highlighted Uruguay’s strategic advantages in the global meat market despite sanitary and tariff barriers faced by competitors. Quilty noted that while conflicts in the Middle East caused temporary shipment declines for both Australia and Uruguay, exporters from both nations successfully maintained supplies to the region.
